This course is broken up into stages. As you progress through each stage, you will be provided with the knowledge AND resources to help your students progress through each stage as well!
Stage Zero:
Introduction and Big Ideas
Stage 0 is all about the big ideas that this course is built upon. This is designed to give you the information you need to put the rest of the course into practice. You'll learn the most effective way to view the CRA model for teaching math, how teaching for exploration rather than memorization can make a big difference, and the true meaning of fact fluency.
Stage one:
Building Confidence
Stage One is all about building confidence. You'll learn the importance of problem solving BEFORE teaching multiplication, how to work with multiplication in a conceptual way, and how gaps in understanding can hold your students back from ever truly understanding multiplication.
Stage Two:
Gaining Understanding
In Stage Two we focus on building multiplicative reasoning skills and an essential foundation that will set your students up for success! It's this foundation and deep understanding that will support students as they dive deeper into multiplication in the next stages.
Stage Three:
Making Connections
This stage is the game changer! You'll learn why making connections is the missing puzzle piece in so many classrooms. You'll help your students see connections and relationships between facts while developing their overall understanding of multiplication. It is these connections that will enable them to solve ANY multiplication fact! I'll also be providing you with lots of resources to help support you and your students.
Stage Four:
Building Flexibility
In Stage Four we focus on flexibility - the often forgotten, but very important, indicator of fact fluency. You'll learn about the difference between teaching conceptually & procedurally, and focus on strategies such as halving and doubling and break apart. As always, you'll be provided with lots of resources that you can take right back to the classroom to help students build their flexibility.
Stage Five:
Becoming Fluent
By Stage Five, your students have developed true fluency with multiplication. In this stage you'll learn how you can help your students easily go beyond 10x10 (even if it's not in the curriculum) because they already have the knowledge they need. We also discuss assessment and how we can continue to teach and assess for flexibility and true fluency.
